The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category May Address This Issue

Whenever a prominent prize-giving event nears, one notices a demand for the addition of new categories to acknowledge overlooked contributions and satisfy the passions of followers who have specialized interests.

Another commentator made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. So would board games, which is someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification backing this proposal is the most urgent and important of all. This is the request: There should be a category for puzzle games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; it’s very subjective, and typically start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason movie academies steer clear of genre categories. But it is an unavoidable compromise in the world of gaming, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute as a single art form.

To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.

Present Award Structure

Leading game ceremonies presently include classifications covering Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these classifications actually cover numerous genres, and you can find room for most games within them.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Think about these recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: building puzzles from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Acknowledgment Issues

Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers released every year lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit classification types such as Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.

  • One classic puzzle game got overlooked completely that year
  • A different innovative game was excluded during that ceremony
  • A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Just some brain-teasers scraped into independent or mobile categories

Significance of Puzzle Games

These are often modest productions, yet the craft behind logic titles is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles stand as most popular titles worldwide continuing this trend for an extended period.

The famous puzzle experience challenges famous sandbox experiences claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it also contends for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, and engaging across multiple categories.

The Solution and Justification

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter this problem. You could fill multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.

Restating the point, these are games that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers are working at the challenging frontier game development, developing some of the purest expressions of the video game form. Just like movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
